Cozumel, Mexico

Cozumel, Mexico is an island in the Caribbean Sea off the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula opposite of Playa del Carmen. Cozumel is part of the state of Qunitana Roo. Cozumel's main industry is tourism and is famous for its snorkeling and scuba diving. The biggest city on Cozumel is San Miguel de Cozumel.

The island is about 48 km (30 mi) long and 16 km (9.9 mi) wide, and is Mexico's largest Atlantic island.

Cozumel lies some 20 km (12 mi) from the mainland, and some 60 km (37 mi) south of Cancún.

Cozumel is an island based on limestone and has many geological sink holes.

The Mayans are believed to be the first civilization to settle the island and many Mayan artifacts have been found on the island. The Mayans believed this island was sacred to Ix Chel, the Mayan God of fertility. Many Mayan temples were destroyed when Hernan Cortez and his fleet destroyed them.

In 1960 Jacques Cousteau discovered the beauty and the extent of the Palancar Reef, and he said it was one of the most beautiful places to scuba dive.

Diving and charter fishing comprise nearly all sources of income. There are more than 90 restaurants on the island and many hotels, some of which run dive operations, have swimming pools, private docks, and multiple dining facilities.
Other water activities include para-sailing, kitesurfing, and a tourist submarine. There are also two dolphinariums.

There are two universities on the island.
An important culture event is the Festival of El Cedral in Cozumel.
